The KEEN Revel winter hiking boot is finished with a dual-climate outsole that pairs 4mm multidirectional lugs with rubber that hardens as the mercury drops, offering dependable traction on packed snow and ice. Fit tip: This boot runs a half-size short. KEEN recommends ordering a half-size up from your normal size (if you normally wear a 10, order a 10.5).

I bought these on sale from EMS in the Dark Earth color and put them to the test in the first snowstorm of the season in the Northeast. They passed with flying colors. Here is why I like them.1. These look even better in person than in the picture. Keen is known for quality products, and you can tell by looking at these boots that they are one of them. The stitching is first rate, the materials are durable and high quality, and the boots are extremely comfortable to wear.IMPORTANT: These run small. You need to order at least 1/2 size larger than you usually wear, and consider a full size up if you plan to wear thick socks. With thin socks these boots fit me fine; with a slightly thicker 1/4 length wool sock (Darn Tough Vermont), they still fit me--but just barely and are somewhat tight.2. These have great traction on slippery surfaces and are very warm. I was outside clearing my driveway of snow in a sleet storm with a 25 degree temperature and was wearing only my 1/4 length wool socks that I had worn to the gym earlier that day. My feet stayed dry and warm, so the waterproofing and insulation definitely work.3. While these are hardly dress shoes, they do look good enough to wear with jeans on a cold winter night when going out for a casual dinner.4. Unlike some boots, these are easy to take on and off.Note: These are not tall boots and go just above your ankles, so for deep snow I would probably wear something else.Bottom line: These are one of the best pair of ankle high waterproof insulated boots that I have owned. And they are not just for winter. They will also work well in wet and muddy conditions, whether hiking or just walking around town and in the park.

I have been a die hard Timberland wearer for 15 years or so. But after ordering a pair of Rime Ridge boots to replace my 8 year old Chocorua boots, I was really disappointed in the quality of craftsmanship. After two summers spent in a pair of Keen Newport sandals, in and out of the water, camping, hiking, and boating... I decided to give Keen boots a try. They are much like the sandals, they seem to fit my feet perfectly. They are comfortable, warm, and waterproof. I followed the advice of other reviewers and ordered a half size larger, and I think that was a wise choice, as it will allow just that little bit of space for thick socks during the dead of winter months. Having been used to the breathable gore tex on my Timberlands, time will tell if that makes a difference to me. I gave 4 stars merely because it has only been a short period of time that I have been wearing them. I have a feeling that I will be just as happy with these boots as I have been with my sandals. I'll update with any issues should they arise.Keen, you have just gained a faithful customer. Don't blow it like Timberland did.UPDATE 2/12/13: I've worn these boots all winter. As in EVERY day, always choosing to leave my other 2 pair of boots sitting lonely in the closet. They are warm & comfortable, and not a drop of wetness entered when hiking through snow in northern Michigan, or just playing in the yard with my kids. If you don't get outside much in the winter, they may be too warm as they do not breathe like Gore Tex. But for my use, they are absolutely awesome.

Having had a pair of uninsulated Keen leather hiking boots, I knew how good the company's products are. Alas, but my favorite boot is no longer made by Keen and, with winter coming, I decided these boots would probably be a good idea. They seem fine so far, but I fear the nylon eyelets won't last as long as metal and I've noticed that these boots are a bit tighter in the toe than my old Keens. I think the insulation makes them a little stiffer as well. I normally take a size 9.5, but now wish I'd gone up to a 10 to allow more air space around my toes.
