5Excellent Quality and Comfort!
By Mystical Reality Is
I have used Helly Hansen gear for more than 30 years. I've never been disappointed with a purchase from this company. In Sweden they have a first rate reputation even though it is a Norwegian company and the rivalry can get a bit hot between the two countries.I bought a pair of mittens as my first purchase from them. At the time they were totally synthetic and I had never seen gloves or mittens like them. Cost 11$ in 1979. They kept my hands warm in the coldest weather I have ever experienced - they were NEVER cold. Now synthetic materials are everywhere, but Helly Hansen was one of the first pioneers of such technology. So, they have more than a bit of experience in this area. Those mittens were my go to ski mittens for almost 20 years (until they finally were worn through in several places). They got so beat up and dirty I was a bit embarrassed by them, but every pair of other mittens or gloves I bought were cold and uncomfortable by comparison. All of my friends who borrowed them for skiing couldn't believe how good they were. Several of my friends hunted for them, but couldn't find them in the US at the time. So, really top notch cold weather gear company I can fully recommend from experience. Scandinavia is REALLY cold!! This is what Scandinavians wear! These boots arrived promptly and were a bit tight at first, but after wearing around the house for a few hours a day over a week they settled in to be super comfortable. I have an extremely high arch and many boots will not fit me at all. These work great, though I bought a half size larger than I usually do for street shoes. As a general principal for snow boots you want some extra space for the toes or they will get cold because the tightness there will limit circulation. The fit is accurate. If you plan on wearing thick socks you might want to go bigger, but honestly I would be amazed if you need them with these. I'm not expecting to need them and will wear just regular sport socks.Wearing them around the house they became extremely comfortable after two weeks of light wear. They are very flexible and feel more like sport shoes than clunky boots. Putting them on and off is a breeze. They tie up easily and stay tied. The D rings for the laces are very well stitched to a large leather patch so they will stay put and not tear out. The bottom leather is water proof. The top is suede. The tongue starts about half way up the boot, so stepping in deep puddles isn't a great idea. The sole is made to have traction in all snow conditions and ice as well - "Helly Grip." Deep grooves should give a superb grip and the flexibility of the sole should cause the snow to release well rather than get stuck, but I can't be sure until I try them out. I once had a pair of boots with a similar tread that were the best traction in snow boots I have owned so far. I haven't had a chance to test these in snow yet, but have no doubt that they will perform excellently. Check out the Helly Hansen site if you want more information on the company or the boots. They are standard equipment issue for a lot of ski resorts and lodges around the world. I fully expect them to last 10 years without problems since I ski only a few weeks a year and these are made for people who live in that kind of stuff 7 to 8 months a year. Materials and manufacture are flawless and very high quality.I have no connection to the company, but having lived in Scandinavia I know how good this company's products are to wear. After wearing Helly Hansen gear you become a lot more picky about other cold weather gear companies. When I got to Scandinavia I was told in no uncertain terms that the right gear means not losing fingers and toes and is NOT optional there. Everybody wore Helly Hansen mittens and it was one of the first purchases I made. I grew up in the deep south, so I had no clue about what was and wasn't good cold weather gear. I learned fast during that year. I trust no other name like this one. And they are super comfortable. They have built their reputation on quality, function and value. I don't think you can possibly go wrong with this company. Millions of people living in extremely cold places have entrusted their lives to Helly Hansen gear. I don't think they are wrong.Update - 03/24/13 I had an opportunity to test these out in Utah this Winter and the traction was excellent. After a few days they felt totally broken in. Very easy to get on and off. I couldn't be happier with them. I wore only regular socks and they were snug at 1/2 size larger than I usually wear, but they were toasty and my feet were never cold. I also didn't seem to sweat in them when indoors. All around superb boots!
