After going through two pairs of cheaper boots in two Boston winters, I decided to try out the famous Sorels. Immediately after taking them out of the box, I could see that they were in a different league -- the construction is extremely solid and clearly made with winter weather in mind. The soles are quite thick, with a slightly flexible ribbed tread that is great on snow and even smooth ice and a sidewall to protect the often-vulnerable join between the upper and the sole. The uppers are mostly leather and are fairly stiff. the grommets are on a separate piece of material that's stitched to the leather body so the holes don't go all the way through. As a result, they are waterproof (at least based on my informal testing with slush-puddles) up to the top of the foot, somewhere in the vicinity of the third grommet. The boots are a bit on the heavy side compared to my old hiking boots (also leather, but with thinner soles), but you won't be trying to power-walk in weather where you need them anyway, and for normal walking they aren't heavy enough to be uncomfortable. They are lined, but only with a thin layer of some sort of cloth or felt; this won't add a lot of warmth, but probably helps with moisture.In short, these are exactly what I wanted: sturdy, stable boots that keep my socks dry without being too heavy, tall, or hot for comfortable use in New England-style winter weather.Note: If you have tall or wide feet, do be sure to order up a half-size or so, as the uppers are designed to fit snugly and may not have room for big feet in thick socks.

These fit great, are comfortable right out of the box. Well made,like all Sorel boots. Great gift, our son loves them. Worth every penny, waterproof and warm. Thank you Amazon, the extra discount was just in time for the holiday's, we appreciate it. Great Buy :)

I love Sorel boots, I have another pair that has lasted 4 tough N.Ontario winters and are still looking good. These Kingston Sorels are downright terrible, all look and no substance. No warmth and the fit is a little tighter than normal, they look great but will not keep your feet very warm.
