I bought these boots because a Command Sergeants Major put them on a list of boots I am authorized to wear in Afghanistan. I bought them in the same size as the unbearable boots issued to me before I deployed. The Asolo Fugitive's fit perfectly and felt great. I tested them initially during a jagged-rock, with desert sand sprinkled throughout, 6-mile mountain "hike" in Laghman Province, Afghanistan. The fit and comfort are superb. Now, I have worn these boots for one month. They are excellent. The soles have handled the sharp rocks and sand well. The heel is snug, thanks to the wrap around strap integrated into lacing design. There is slight wear on the collar of the boot, but nothing that concerns me. I expect them to last they year-long deployment because I am buying a second pair so that I can start a rotation. I highly recommend these boots to any Soldier who is lucky enough to have a chain of command willing to allow thier Soldiers to wear equipment that acutally works. I am sorry that Soldiers have to pay over $200 out of pocket to have this level of comfort; I did, and I do not regret it. Lastly, I am not some fobbit 1SG that sits at the coffee shop while his Soldiers are out on the ridgeline; I am a rare breed that is known as the "fighting first sergeant". Asolo Fugitives are for Soldiers who appreciate a real boot for the real deal.

I have been using a pair of Merrill mid pulse that I wanted to upgrade. I do a lot of hiking in the Chugach Mountains in Alaska and need something that grips well, but I like light weight. I tried on at least a dozen different shoes before choosing this pair. I have never owned a pair of Asolo before now.The Fugitive fit the best in the store and seemed to hold my feet in place, even when facing straight downhill. I went out today, 5 degrees F, packed/icy trail, climbing 900 feet in elevation in less than a mile. At one point there is a 10 inch wide ice ridge to traverse. I loved the gripping aspect of my Merrills, but these boots are even better. The ridgid lateral support is excellent for a boot that doesn't have external plastic. No slipping going up or down hill. Toes dug in nicely on very hard pack. On the way down the lower part of the trail has some horse traffic and I stepped into a hoof print hole. Other than tripping, the support of these boots saved me from a bad sprain at minimum.We will see what time brings, but so far I am extremely pleased with the support and stability of these boots. No internal foot slipping. Feet stayed warm with just one pair of midium weight wool socks.

I've been buying Asolo's since 2000. I strayed to a different brand (Vasques-they were on sale) once and ended up with a bad sprained ankle that had me on crutches for a month. I've been true to Asolo ever since.I am an avid hiker and backpacker. I also spend a lot of time hiking as part of my job. In a typical week I generally hike an average of 5-8 miles per day. The terrain is mixed and typically off trail and sometimes very exposed routes. A pair of these boots will last me about 6 months, I typically buy a pair about every four months so I have the next set waiting when I wear the current ones out.A few years ago (2007-2008-ish) I think Asolo had some quality control issues as the soles were separating from the uppers and the stitching between the cordura and the leather/suede would come apart after a few weeks. Despite my disappointment in the boots I continued to be true to the brand and after 2008 have not been disappointed since.I find the Fugitive's a good mid to light weight boot. The soles provide traction in every time of terrain I've taken them through and the Gore-tex liner has kept my feet dry. I've worn these boots in nearly every type of inclement weather (from Alaskan sleet, snow and wind to Arizona's 115+ degree days) and varying pitches and inclines as well as from alpine tundra, arctic tundra to coastal grasslands and short grass prairie. They have held up remarkably well.The initial appeal of these boots was the rubber toe guard and the lacing system. Before I wore Asolo's I would wear out a pair of boots because the leather at the toes would be so tore up by the abuse. The rubber toe guard protects the leather material as well as provides some buffer from rocks as well as spiny and sharp objects. The ankle support is superb, since my ankle injury, my ankle tends to get tired later in the day. A few times my ankle has given out on me while I've been walking or carrying packs and although my ankle twists a little bit a lesser boot wouldn't allow me to keep going and protect my ankle from complete strain.On a number of occasions I've worn these boots for a week straight right out of the box. I wouldn't say I have 'soft' feet and have only experienced blisters when I have folds in my socks or got the wrong sized boot in the right sized box.I have done a few pack trips where I have carried more than 60 lbs and I find the ball of my foot is a little tender when we stop for camp. For work and play, I typically carry anywhere from 20-40 pounds and I think that these boots are well suited for that weight load. The inserts that come with the boot are worthless and I throw them away before I use them. I've been using Superfeet Green's as the insole for these boots.I feel these run pretty close to size, if you have wide feet I'd recommend the wides. My heels are narrow and the balls of my feet are a bit wider, so I've purchased the wides a few times. I don't notice much of a difference so I generally purchase the regular width. I can say my foot (namely my heel) doesn't feel sloppy in the boots with a wide.I love the comfort of putting on a pair of these boots, broke in or brand new. They're like an old friend.My first few pairs of Fugitives I'd treat the leather and cordura with some of the Nikwax or similar product. I found it extended the life of the leather (which after 6 months of Arizona's heat plus getting wet and dry every week will get very hard) but that didn't benefit me much as I'd wear the soles out and it would be time to get a new pair anyways.These boots have taken every abuse that I've thrown at them, and would've gotten 5 stars if they lasted more than 6 months. However, I'm not the typical or average user and I know what to expect for their lifespan. Overall, I'm pleased and find the price point for quality a good assurance that my feet and ankle's will be good for the next six months.
